Biography

Anthony Allaire is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

Anthony was born in 1828. He was the son of John Allaire and Julia Van Tassel. He married Sarah Clark Jarvis in 1858. Anthony was a merchant in the millinery trade, a real estate investor, and during the late 1870s and early 1880s, superintendent of the workhouse on Blackwell's Island. [1] He passed away in 1915.

Research

Blackwell's Island was made (in)famous by Nellie Bly and her account of abuses and mistreatment of inmates in "Ten Days in the Madhouse." There were two people, cousins, named Anthony Allaire in New York City at his time. First cousin (1x removed), Anthony Johnson Allaire, was a captain in the police department. This Anthony's middle name is yet unknown but the initial "B" appears in several records.
