Biography

This Sir Giles Alington was the first of three of that name. He was said to be aged 12 when his father was killed in the Battle of Bosworth Field (1485) and his estate was therefore held in trust for him by John Cheyne, John Heveningham, and Richard Gardiner [subsequently his father-in-law] until he became of age. Giles was High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire & Huntingdonshire in 1520.

This Giles became the ward of Sir Richard Gardiner as the prospective husband for his daughter, Mary. Gardiner's Will of 1488 states: "I Will that Audry my wife have the reward of Giles Alington my ward whom I have ordained for the marriage of my daughter Mary with the profits of the lands which I have by reason of the same ward during the Nonnage of the same Gyles and so from heir to their according with the words of my patent and as it is covenanted by indenture between me and the executors of William Alington, father unto the said Gyles my ward; And if the said Gyles dies before that he and Mary my daughter be married or before they lie together, I Will that then George the second brother of the same Giles have the same to wyfe if the same children can so agree."^[3]

Here under lyeth buryed, Sir Gyles Alington, Knight, who died, 25 Aprilis, An. 1522. He maryed Marye, the only daughter and heire, of Sir Richard Gardener, Knighte, and by her had issue, Gyles, George, William, John, Anthonie, Roberte, Richarde, Awdrye, Joanne and Marye.

Sir Gyles Knight Sonne and Heyre of Sir Gyles Alington Knight died 20 Augustii Ano. 1586, and in they of his age 86. He first married Ursula, Daughter of Sir Robert Drury, Knighte, and by her had issue, Robert. Secondly, he married Alice, Daughter and Heyre of John Middleton, Esquire, before wife of Thomas Elrington, Esquire, and by her had issue Thomas, Richard, William, Phillip, Ann, Frances, Elizabeth, Jane, and Margaret, and thirdly he married Margaret daughter of John Talkakerne Esquire, before the wife of Thomas Argall Esquire and by her had no issue.

Robert Alington Esquire, sonne and heyre apparent of Sir Gyles Alington Knight died 22 Maii, Ano. 1552. He married Margaret daughter of William Coningsbye, one of the judges of the law, and by her had issue John, Giles, James, George, Alice, Ann, Margaret, Elizabeth, Frances and Beatrice.

Gyles Alington, Esquire, son and heyre of Robert Alington Knight died 25 November Ano. 1572. He married Margaret daughter of Sir John Spencer, Knight, and by her had issue, Gyles, John, Margaret, which Gyles last named being great grandchild unto the said Sir Gyles was also at his decease his next heyre.
