Biography

Doris Hilda Alger was born on 18 June 1922 at 11, Layard Road, Bermondsey, London, the daughter of Joseph Alger, a plumber and Minnie Anthoney ^[1]

She was educated between 1933 and 1937, at Addey and Stanhope School, New Cross, London, where she won a sports medal for the high jump.

Doris married Francis Leonard Winton on 7 October 1944 at St Paul's church, Deptford. ^[2]

She worked for the following employers:

• 1937-1940, Boots the Chemist, filing clerk
• 1940-1944 London Fire Brigade, switchboard operator
• 1963-1972 Electoral Registration officer, Catford Town Hall
