Biography

James Alexander was 79 years old when he died in 1851. He had 14 children, buried two spouses. When he was eight years old his family moved to that part of Rowan County NC which later was named Iredell County, NC. He studied for the ministry and taught school a short time at an academy on Bullock's Creek. James Alexander moved to Lawrence Co, Alabama in 1819, just 4 years before the death of Kitty, his first spouse. When Kitty died in May of 1823, James married Elizabeth Sheffield on July 6, 1823. Only 5 graves make up the "Old Alexander Cemetery". James Alexander, Kitty (Walker) Alexander, (right of James) Elizabeth (Sheffield) Alexander(left of James), Mary Alexander Aldridge,and her husband John Newton Aldridge, SR. James, Mary and John all died within 3 months of each other. Many deaths occurred August thru November in 1851. Chlorea Epidemic not verified.

The "Alexander Cemetery" adjoins the Old Alexander Cemetery. There are also slaves buried in a place near James and the other graves. These graves are marked with rocks while James and others have large imposing granite headstones.
