Raymond Pace Alexander, lawyer, judge and civil rights leader in Philadelphia, argued several high-profile anti-discrimination and desegregation cases before becoming the first African-American judge appointed to the Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas (the trial courts of Pennsylvania). He was the first Black graduate of the Wharton School of Business, and a professorship for the studies of Civil Rights and race relations was established in his honor at the University of Pennsylvania.

Raymond Alexander was born in 1897 in Philadelphia. His parents were Hillard Boone Alexander and Virginia Pace,[1]
both formerly enslaved in Virginia.[2]
He married Sadie Tanner Mossell in Philadelphia in 1923;[3]
she was the first Black woman to earn a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and granddaughter of a well-known Bishop of the A.M.E. church, Benjamin Tanner. They had two daughters who lived to adulthood, and at least one child that died in infancy.[4][5][6]
Raymond graduated from Harvard Law School in 1924. Among his many cases, he took two county school districts to court for trying to establish segregated school systems. He also initiated action that led to a U.S. Supreme Court order to admit Blacks to Girard College.
Raymond was also involved politically; he served on the Philadelphia City Council and was later appointed to the Common Pleas Court in 1959. In 1963, Ebony magazine cited him as one of the most influential Blacks in the United States.[4]
He died in 1974 in Philadelphia and is buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania.[7][8] He was survived by his wife Sadie and their two daughters, both of whom had married by that time.
In 2007, the University of Pennsylvania endowed the Raymond Pace and Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander Professorship, devoted to the study of civil rights and race relations, in honor of both Raymond and his wife Sadie. [9]
