John was born about 1757. He was a hatter per the top hat carved into his tombstone. He passed away in 1831. [1] He is listed in a directory of headstones from the Alexander Private Cemetery in Hanover County, Virginia in 1831.[2]

It is uncertain when he moved to Virginia.
Family history indicates that John was from Williamsburg and the first in the area. His great-grandson William Monroe Alexander said John married a widow Knight. Members of the Knight and Dare families from Williamsburg are buried in an adjoining older graveyard, now nothing but woods and sunken pits. Richmond Times-Dispatch on 8 January 1956 in Richmond, Virginia. [3]
