Biography

Archie Alexander is Notable.

Archie Alphonso Alexander was an African-American mathematician and engineer. He was appointed as Governor of the US Virgin Islands by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. His tenure at the post was short and controversial. In 1955, he was highly criticized for favoring old business partners in contracts for road building on St. Thomas. The United States House of Representatives launched a probe and he subsequently resigned on August 18, 1955, ostensibly for health reasons.

Archie was born in Iowa on May 14, 1888. He was the son of Sterling Alexander and Mary Hamilton.

In the 1895 census Archie (age 6) was in Wapello, Iowa, United States.^[1]

In the 1900 census Archy (age 12) was the single son of Price Alexander in Saylor Township, Polk, Iowa, United States.^[2]

In the 1910 census Archie (age 21) was the single son of Price Alexander in Des Moines Ward 3, Polk, Iowa, United States.^[3]

When Archie was 25 years old he married he married Audra Linzy on June 25, 1913^[4].

On February 26, 1925, the couple had a son Archie Alphonso Alexander^[5].

He passed away in Iowa on January 4, 1958. Burial was in the Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.^[6]
