  • Notes on the name Adrain/Adrian - The name is first recorded in the Annals of Connacht for 1246 when the family were defeated by the coalition of the Normans and the Mac Dermots (Mac Diarmaida). They were hereditary custodians of the monastery at Boyle. Co. Roscommon. The name was originally Ua Dreâain and I believe the name is also Ua Direâain. It was originally a christian name in keeping with most Irish names The Ua is the same as âO today and the name has been corrupted by loss of vowels. The same thing happened in the case of many other names e.g. Ua (âO) Gnâiomh = Agnew. The root of the name might be from Draoi + âean i.e druid bird = wren. It is not the same as Adrian although some Adrains have changed the spelling to that. It was always claimed in my family that it is âO Direâain or âO Dreâain in Irish. The name in its various forms i.e. Adreane, O'Drain, Adrain etc. was mainly found in the coastal districts of Conamara or in Antrim e.g. Aonraâi (Henry) an Dâonall âO Dreâaine are found in the old Carrickfergus records for the period 1550-1590. The name is also found in Antrim in the hearth Money Rolls of 1669. I hope this brief summary helps, Stiofâan âO Direâain
