Eugene Adler fled to New York, USA

Egon Adler was born on 27 January 1938 in Dortmund, Westfalen, Preußen, Deutsches Reich, son of David Adler and Friederike Blumenthal. Egon had a brother Manfred Adler (born 22 September 1918, died 5 July 1996 in Canada).

Since 1937, Egon was residing at Hasestraße 31 with the family of Julius Buchdahl.^[1] He was working as a clerk.^[1] Egon Adler married his wife Margarete (born 23 December 1911) on 30 August 1938 in Osnabrück.^[1] Margarete also moved in with Egon into the building at Hasestraße 31.^[1] Before the reichprogrom in November 1938, Egon had left Osnabrück and had gone back to Dortmund.^[1]

The next month, Egon Adler fled from the Nazi regime and emigrated on 7 December 1938 via the Netherlands to the United States^[1]: he travelled via Vlissingen in the Netherlands on the ship Gerolstein and a possession of 40.00 USD and arrived in New York on 2 January 1939.^[2] His wife Margarete followed him and emigrated in April 1939.

Egon Adler applied for naturalization on 1 June 1939 in New York.^[3][4] At this time, he was residing at 614 West 152 St. in New York.^[3] He was described as being 5 feet 5 inch tall, of dark complexion with brown eyes and black hair.^[3] At this time the couple did not yet have any children.^[3]

In the 1940 census Egon Adler (age 27), Clerk, was with his wife in New York, New York, New York.^[5]

He americanized his first name to Eugene when he was drafted for the US military on 16 October 1940, when he was working for Eisenkramer & Co.^[6]

Eugene was naturalised on 18 March 1944, when he was residing at 25 Hillside Avenue in New York. His father died in Auschwitz in 1944 and his mother died on 8 May 1945, on VE-day. It is likely that Eugene only learned much later about the fate of his parents.

Egon Adler was in a Social Security record on 8 November 2002.^[7]
