Gertrude came to America after the death of her husband Peter Stoffel, about 1847, with her son John Stoffel and her daughter Barbara Stoffel. On 1 May 1849, Gertrude purchased 40 acres of land in Section 28, on the north shore of Sullivan Lake, near Volo, Lake County, Illinois. On 28 April 1851, Gertrude Stoffel nee Adams, married widower Mathias Schumacher, they were the parents of a son Mathias Schumacher
