Biography

Sarah Adams and Allen Wyly married in Ulster in 1695. [1] There is no indication in the minutes considering their request to marry of where the couple lived or who their parents were, although we know that Allen Wiley was from county Londonderry.

Various other people called Adams appear in the early records of the Ulster Quaker meetings and might or might not have been relatives of hers. For example Michael Adams and Isabel Adams (a widow) appear in consecutive records in the Quakers sufferings book for county Antrim for 1676. [2] Michael Adams married in 1677 and Hugh Adams features in the minutes in 1675.

We know from the Quaker records in Pennsylvania that Allen Wiley had various children, some of whom are stated to have been born in Coleraine. It is probable that Sarah Adams was their mother. (See Allen Wyly's profile.) Allen Wiley himself is also mentioned there, but Sarah does not appear in the records - unless her husband had died by 1737 and the Sarah Wiley disowned for being married by a priest was her. [3] However, it is perhaps more likely that this was another daughter or someone completely unrelated.

On balance it seems likely that Allen Wiley migrated to Pennsylvania in about 1724 and it is quite probable that Sarah Adams emigrated with him, but no records to confirm this have been found.

Research notes

No birth or death record located. The date of her birth has been estimated from the date of her marriage.

There are remarkably few records of her husband Allen Wiley and even fewer of Sarah Adams. Indeed the only clear mentions of her are two minutes discussing her proposed marriage in 1695.

Details of Sarah's birth in Maryland and death (in Pennsylvania) in 1770 mentioned in previous versions of this profile are very unlikely and not supported by any credible sources.

The Ireiand Quaker team and the Quakers project have been reviewing the profiles of members of the Lightfoot and Wiley families. As a result of this review, I have already removed one child who did not belong in this family and added others that did as well as re-writing her husband's profile. Unfortunately there is very little information about her. We can, however, be sure of a few things.

- She married in a Quaker ceremony in Ulster in 1695.

- She was not born in Maryland

- She had at least four children with her husband, almost certainly in Ulster

- Her husband and her children migrated to Pennsylvania, probably in about 1724; if she was still alive then, which is not certain, then she would have moved with them

- She must have died by 1741 when her husband remarried.

I intend to make changes to this effect in the next few days and plan to delete any content that is not relevant.
