Through his expertise in fatty acid analysis Ackman played an important role in the development of low-erucic acid rapeseed oil (canola oil).

Professor Emeritus at Dalhousie University, he is one of Canada's leading oil chemists. For the past four decades, he has dedicated himself to the understanding of the biochemistry of oils, fats and lipids. His highly acclaimed research has led to significant developments in canola oil and the fish farming industries. He has also contributed to the general public's awareness of the nutritional value of fish oils in our diets. In addition, he is a widely published author and his innovative chromatographic methods are duplicated by scientists worldwide.[1]
Robert George Ackman was born on 27 Sep 1927 in Dorchester, Westmorland, New Brunswick, Canada, son of Robert Kenneth Ackman (1905 - ) and Charlotte Augusta (Ward) Ackman (1904 - 1983).
Robert died on 16 Jul 2013 in Halifax, Halifax, Nova Scotia aged 85. He is buried in Dartmouth, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.[2]
He was a chemist and professor. He was best known for his pioneering work on marine oils and Omega-3 fatty acid.
