He was born in Connecticut in 1893[1] and studied at Groton School, followed by Yale University and then Harvard Law School, where he was elected to the Harvard Law Review.[2]
Dean married Alice Caroline Stanley on May 5, 1917[3] at Detroit, Wayne, Michigan.
In 1917, he was mess Sergeant in the Artillery branch of the Connecticut National Guard [4] He served in the U.S. Navy during World War I and received a law degree from Harvard (1918).[5]
In the ensuing years, Dean had a variety jobs in the law field; secretary to Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis,[5] Under Secretary of the Treasury,[2],Assistant Secretary of State for Economic Affairs (1941-1944)[2],undersecretary of state (1945-1949)[6], and became the 51st United States Secretary of State (1949-1953), advisor to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, and in 1968 advised Johnson to de-escalate the war in Vietnam.[5]
Over the years, he had a lot of involvement in policy and significant historical events;
oversaw the U.S. oil embargo of Japan; represented the United States in negotiations that led to the creation of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the International Monetary Fund; faced questions related to international control of atomic weapons; the fall of mainland China to the Communist forces of Mao Zedong and the retreat of the U.S.-backed Nationalists to Taiwan; the rebuilding of Japan as a cornerstone of U.S. policy in East Asia; the Korean War; and Soviet designs on Yugoslavia, the Middle East, and Asia.[2].
During his time, he served under Eisenhower, Truman and Roosevelt. After retirement, he continued to serve as an advisor to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, and in 1968 advised Johnson to de-escalate the war in Vietnam.[5]
Dean Acheson died in 1971[7] and is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Washington, DC.[8]
