Robert was a soldier in the American Civil War. [1] At the time of his enlistment, he was residenced in Chillicothe, Ohio and was a farmer. [2] He enlisted on 5 June 1863 at Readville, Massachusetts. [3] Ohio boasted more African American volunteers than any other state. Most of these volunteers were free men and eager to join the fight once Congress passed an act allowing for the enlistment of "colored" troops. [4] He was a member of Company H, 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. This unit was a sister unit to the 54th which was the first Regiment raised solely with African-American soldiers. The demand to join the 54th was so great, that another regiment was deemed necessary, hence the 55th Regiment.

Death

Robert died 16 December 1902. [5] He was buried in Green Lawn Cemetery, Scioto, Ross, Ohio. [6]
