Biography

Notables Project
David Abner is Notable.

David Abner (senior), born into slavery in Selma, Alabama :

  • Was appointed to the executive committee of the first Colored Men's State Convention (1873)
  • Was elected treasurer for Harrison County
  • Was an African-American state representative from Texas
  • Was elected to the legislature for Harrison and Rusk counties (1874)
  • Served in the Fourteenth Texas Legislature for District 5 and sat on the Education Committee
  • Was a delegate to the 1875 Texas Constitutional Convention
  • Was the vice president of the Republican State Convention in 1876
  • Helped establish Bishop College (1881), and served as one of its first trustees
  • Helped to organize Bethesda Baptist Church (Harrison County), and became one of its first deacons

David married firstly Louisa (last name unknown, but later given by her youngest son as "Kilworth"), place and date unknown; and secondly Mollie Price, on 22 April 1879, in Marion County, Texas.[1]

David Abner — educator, politician, farmer, Pioneer for people of color, Voice for the formerly enslaved, father, grandfather, uncle, husband, man of faith — passed from the adventure called life, into the next greatest adventure beyond death in 1902, in Marshall, Harrison County, Texas, United States, aged about 76 years. He was buried in the Powder Mill Cemetery (once occupied by a Confederate gun powder factory, hence the name), Marshall.[2] David's first wife, Louisa, is also buried at Powder Mill, the oldest known marked burial (although the commemorative plaque mis-names her as "Millie", even though the grave marker clearly says "Louisa").
