Baptised June 9, 1946 St. Joseph's Church, Joliet, IL He grew up in Aurora, IL, where he attended St. Mary's school for Kindergarten, then Our Lady of Good Counsel school through 8th grade.
He attended Marmion Military Academy where he was a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and won a scholarship to Loyola University, Chicago. In high school he was in the marching band. He was a paper carrier for the Aurora Beacon-News during the last part of grade school and worked part time at Sheagren's Pharmacy during High School.
He received a B.S. in Chemistry from Loyola where he was a member of Alpha Delta Gamma Fraternity and the ROTC. He served on active duty in the Infantry at Ft. Ord, CA, and Korea from 1969-71.
He married Chrystal Lewandowski on February 14, 1970 in Caledonia, Wisconsin. He worked in manufacturing operations management for most of his career. The Abhalters lived in Park Forest South, Mansfield, Ohio, Grand Rapids, Michigan (25 years), and Paducah, Kentucky, before retiring to Kenosha, Wisconsin in 2009.
