The origins of the name Abernethy are uncertain. Abernethy is the name of a district in Speyside and of a village near Perth. ‘Aber’ means 'mouth of' and ‘Nethy’ is a Celtic river name of uncertain origin. Abernethy is known to have had a former Pictish royal residence and a Christian settlement around the year 600. Sir William de Abernethy was implicated in the murder of Duncan, Earl of Fife in 1288 and was sentenced to life in prison. William de Abernethy, called Lord Saltoun, affixed his seal to the Declaration of Abroath in 1320. King David II granted the family the lands of Rothiemay. Margaret, heiress of the last Abernethy Lord Saltoun, married Sir Alexander Fraser of Philorth. The main family were afterwards absorbed into Clan Fraser, with their son declared Lord Saltoun by Parliament in 1669.
The arms of Abernethy are now to be found quartered with those of Fraser in the heraldry of the present Fraser chief, Lady Saltoun. Eighteenth-century heraldic authority, Alexander Nisbet, gave the main cadet branch to be Abernethy of Auchnacloich. Bearers of the name Abernethy were heavily involved in the religious conflicts of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. John Abernethy, minister of Jedburgh, was appointed Bishop of Caithness in 1616. He was ejected from office in 1638 when the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland decisively rejected episcopacy, leading to the First Bishop’s War the following year. William Abernethy Drummond (1720-1809) was descended from the Abernethy of Saltoun family, and became Episcopal bishop of Edinburgh and Glasgow in 1787.
