Russell was killed in a plane crash in World War II in the Netherlands just after dropping off Polish paratroopers. After crashing in the Netherlands, all the crew aboard were killed, the Germans opened dykes to flood the area. When the Dutch returned after the war they discovered remains and buried the remains in a nearby cemetery. In 1950 the remains were removed, returned to the U.S. and buried as a group in Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Kentucky. Apparently in 1994 more remains were discovered however did not get turned over to the U.S. until 2001. When the remains were Identified Russell was finally laid to rest at Arlington Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. A local newspapers article on the story is located in the images for Russell.
