William Abell was a millwright and engineer, owner of an Iron Foundry at 53 Brook Street, Derby employing over 100 men with noted works still preserved in Derby.[1]
A silk-throwing machinery, for the conversion of raw silk into threads, made at Derby, by Mr. William Abell was among exhibits presented by manufacturer Joseph L. Davenport at the 1851 Great Exhibition[2]
A small 7 hp horizontal steam engine by the Derby engineers, William Abell provided for the Derby Malt Vinegar Co. was removed to the Derby Industrial Museum in 1986

William Abell was born in 1808 in Milford, Parish of Duffield, Derbyshire and was christened in Duffield on 28 August 1808, the son of William and Ruth (Ryalls) Abell[4]

William Abell passed away on 26 November 1873 in Derby, Derbyshire aged 65 years. His Will was executed on 22 May 1874 citing his sons William and Robert as first and second beneficiaries[19][20]
