Biography

"They came to make their home at the Pringle Gibson farm, originally owned by William Neilson, the pioneer settler of the town. Here they developed their fine Vermont home and prosperous dairy farm and raised their family of four sons and four daughters..... Often the center of social activity, their home was always hospitably open to their friends and relatives and those of their children. Mrs. Nelson was never happier than when her house was overrun with young folks. In the autumn of that year {1925} Mrs. Nelson accompanied her daughters, Margaret and Florence, on an automobile journey to Colorado, where Margaret taught in the school for the deaf and Florence was head dietician in a large sanitarium. Along the way they renewed acquaintances with relatives and friends from Vermont who had settled in the mid-west and west. Their trip extended to the Grand Canyon, and the Pacific Coast and Mexico." <Obituary, Caledonian-Record, St. Johnsbury, Vermont, Feb. 10, 1943>

1943 (Written at Sunnydale, Vermont,
the home of the late John and Annette Nelson.
Mrs. Nelson had died earlier the same year)

Her flowers still are blooming, fresh and gay,
Her rockery is thriving down the wall;
Her cedars and her spruces, grave and tall,
Gaze quietly at Mt. Roy across the way.

I thought I saw her many times each day
At work on beds for planting bulbs next fall;
Up from the iris I could hear her call ~
I could not think that she has moved away.

Strong souls like her leave more than they can take
In beauty, and the wholesome joy of living;
The loneliness I feel here and the ache
Her absence brings, are much less than her giving
The gift of strength to live our own lives through,
The gift of fearless faith ~ the gift of you.

<Jackson, Belding F., A Collection of Poems, Anniversary Sonnets, (Belding Jackson Family, Belchertown, MA, 1970> Belding Jackson, was Nettie's son-in-law. He wrote a sonnet for his wife Florence (Nelson) Jackson each year on their anniversary from 1928 to 1969.

Died at Mary Hitchcock Hospital, Hanover, NH, but still resident of Ryegate, VT at the time.
