Biography

Joshua was born about 1746. He passed away about 1812.

Joshua and Azubah resided in Brookfield, Levertt, Dalton, and Conway, Massachusetts before finally settling in Phelps, New York about 1810.

Joshua Abbot served as Sergeant in the militia company of Capt. John Morgan. This company was detached from militia companies of Hampshire and Worcester counties to guard stores at Brookfield and Springfield. Joshua served from 29 December 1777 to 1 July 1778.^[1]

In 1790, the household of Joshua Abbot was eleven persons at Conway: three males 16 and over, two males under 16, and six females.^[2] The family was enumerated at Conway in 1800 and 1810, the household in 1810 consisting of one male 45 and over, one female 45 and over, and one female 10 to 15.^[3]

In his will written 8 May 1812 (probate 4 June 1812), Joshua Abbot of Phelps bequeathed one hundred dollars to son Joshua Porter Abbot. Daughter Perthenia Swan receives twenty dollars as does daughter Sally Caitlin. Wife Azubah Abbot receives the tenement in Phelps where they currently live during the term of her natural life. After Azubah’s decease, the estate I to be divided among his children: Joshua Porter Abbot, Vashti Gates, Sophia Severance, Azubah Crittenden, Sally Catlin, and Perthenia Swan. Wife Azubah was named executrix and William Catlin was named executor.^[4]
