Biography

Elspet was born on 9 July 1808 to Robert Abby and Elizabeth Butter and baptised later the same month.^[1]

• Notes on Conflation:
  • This profile originally had the parents with birth and baptism dates for Elspet Abbey, but the marriage of Elspet Anderson, who married Andrew Mitchell of Tullynessle.
  • Possibly married a different Andrew Mitchell. A marriage is recorded of Elizabeth Abbey and Andrew Mitchell in 1837 in St Monance^[2]
  • Previously, death date was listed as 12 May 1875; There is no source to show this is the correct date. Scotlands People's site has that date for Elspet Mitchell of Tullynessle, which is most likely Elspet (Anderson) Mitchell's death date.
• Family spent time in Pittenweem according to the births of her younger siblings. Brother, William is in the 1881 census with a birthplace of St Monance, Fifeshire. This would put the family there about 10 years after Elspet's birth (see William's profile).
