Jacob John Fullerton 'Jack' Aarons was born in 1881 in Hillston, New South Wales (Australia). He was the eldest son of Solomon Aarons and Annie Hart. [1] His family soon after moved to Orange, New South Wales and then to Donald, Victoria.
Jack married Marion Everett-Allpress in 1915 in Subiaco, Western Australia. [2]On 10th July 1916 in Perth, Western Australia, Jack enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, his young nation's all volunteer, expeditionary force for the (First World) War. [3] He was allocated to the 51st Infantry Battalion, with whom he embarked for Europe at Fremantle aboard HMAT Argyllshire on 9th November 1916. [4]
On 5th May 1917 he transferred to the 16th Infantry Battalion, in which his younger brother, 2nd Lieutenant (later Captain, MC and Bar) Daniel Sidney Aarons, was serving.Whilst sitting in the YMCA dugout at Messines on 7th July 1917, shrapnel from an exploding shell hit Jack in the head. He was evacuated to the 2nd Casualty Clearing Station, however, died of wounds four days later. After initially being buried in Ploergstreert Cemetery, his remains were exhumed [5] and are now buried in the Trois Arbres Cemetery, Steenwerck, Nord Pas de Calais, France. John Fullarton Aarons's name is located at panel 78 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. [6]
Following the war his widow was issued his British War Medal and Victory Medal. Marion was then living at 6 King's Road, Subiaco. She remained widowed until her death in 1975. Jack and Marion had no children.
