Gerlach Aab was born about 1762 in the Darmstadt area of what is now Germany, to parents Johann Heinrich Aab and his wife Anna Katharina (Unknown) Aab. ^[1]

When he was 4 years old, Gerlach and his family immigrated to Russia, arriving on 22 July 1766 on the Pink Lev, ^[2] a small, flat-bottomed ship with a narrow stern, typically square rigged and used to sail short distances and/or in shallow waters. ^[3]

There is an error in the first census of Grimm, taken in 1767, because Gerlach and his sister were not included with their parents in family #16. Normally this would indicate that the children did not survive the journey to the Volga River, but in this case, at least one of the children, Gerlach, appeared again in the 1775 Grimm census. He was too young to be living with another family or in another village.

The 1775 census entry includes a daughter Katharina Elisabeth, born in 1770, but she is a different daughter from Elisabeth, born in 1765. The elder Elisabeth would have been 10 years old in 1775, and typically she would still be living with her family, were she alive. It is probable that she didn't survive the journey to the Volga or died after the family arrived in Grimm, perhaps up to 1770, at which time a different daughter was given the same name.
