According to Chappie, his father John was sent at a young age [about 12] to work in a nearby factory town- that would be 1875. He decided that wasn't for him [I believe that cholera might have been going on in England at that time] and instead stowed away aboard a Merchant Marine vessel, and worked as a cabin boy, sailing around the world, until he was of an age to join the Royal Navy, and then sailed around the world again. He retired to Iowa and married Julia Wilson, with whom he had 13 [?] children, 12 of them boys. Chappie was the second-to-youngest son.
