Rochester is a town and former city in the unitary authority of Medway in the county of Kent in South East England. Rochester is probably the most famous of the Medway Towns. It was actually a city until 1998, and is the site of a crossing over the River Medway which has been in use since the Roman occupation around 2,000 years ago.
Two of the most famous historical buildings in Rochester are the castle which was built in approximately 1088 to defend the Medway Estuary from invaders and the cathedral built in the 11th century.
