Henry County was carved from Pittsylvania County in 1776, effective 1 January 1777. It was named for Patrick Henry, who was then serving as the first Governor of Virginia after Independence. In 1790, Patrick County was formed from a portion of Henry County.
The county seat is usually identified as the enclaved independent city of Martinsville; however, the administration building (where county offices are located and where the board of supervisors holds meetings) and county courthouse are located in Collinsville. Henry County is part of the Martinsville, VA Micropolitan Statistical Area.
