Texas First Families category. The Republic of Texas was an independent sovereign country that existed from March 2, 1836 (see also: Texas Revolution) until February 19, 1846. On December 29, 1845, the Republic of Texas was annexed by the United States and admitted to the Union as the 28th state. The transfer of power from the Republic of Texas to the State of Texas formally took place on February 19, 1846.

The Texas First Families are those individuals who either settled in Texas or served the Republic of Texas before February 19, 1846.
