The family d'Aquino (originally Summucula) is of Longobard roots and takes his name from ancestors that held the function of "Gastaldo" (administrator on behalf of the king) of the village of Aquino south of Rome. They managed to remain for centuries among the top families of the kingdom becoming sometimes close relatives of the King of Naples.S. Tommaso d'Aquino is one of the leading catholic philosophers.
