Edward III Project: Gateway Ancestors - do you have one? (Round 2)

+48 votes
11.4k views

This is round two of an old G2G question.  Round one is here.  The idea here is to find new gateway ancestors.  If your ancestor already appears on the list below there is no need post the line.

Below is a list of 17th century new world immigrants with a recognized descent from Edward III, king of England. The list was kindly provided by Douglas Richardson, author of the Royal Ancestry series.  Links to all of them can be found on this page.

This list currently is 70 individuals representing 55 different families. Of the 70 individuals, 32 settled in the Southern Colonies, 27 in the New England Colonies, and 11 were part of the Quaker migration to the Middle Colonies.

Use the Relationship Finder to find if you have a connection to Edward III, king of England (Plantagenet-70). Does your gateway ancestor appear below?  If not, we will work to prove or disprove your connection.

Do you have a gateway ancestor from a population group other than American colonial immigrants (e.g. Australian, South African, European, etc.)? Post them here or in a separate G2G post and we will create new categories and new lists to track them. The line must be very well documented.

The List of 17th Century New World Immigrants

Joe, I was able to break the line myself, BUT, how to keep it that way? There’s already a ===Disputed Origins=== section there for him.

- Nancy
Thanks Nancy. I will have the Southern Colonies project add project protection to the profile.

Margaret Toshach is being accepted as one of the very additions to the ancestors of Ed. III list.

I am a Lowe and was wondering if we are related. Edward 111 is my 19th great grandfather.

Nancy Lowe Sitlar
Appears we are 6th cousins 1x removed.
THAT IS AWESOME. HELLO COUSIN!!
can someone check mine Craven-3277. it shows Edward III is my 20th gif but it won’t let me post it here because it’s too long.

Thanks!

Sheryl, I posted your line in round 3 of this question.

Your line runs through Jane Deighton, one of the relatively few immigrants with a proven ancestry to Edward III.

The line is good, at least starting from Jane on.  I will leave it to you confirm the rest of the American ancestry.

Thank you so much Joe! This was fun and interesting and I truly appreciate all you have done. It wasn’t easy answering all these requests. We kept you really busy and you went above and beyond! You are awesome!

This line currently does not exist on WikiTree.  It will be very hard to prove as it is dependent on sources which are not readily available. Do you have the Collins Family book?

We can start with, why do we think the immigrant Charles Collins-4064 was a son of William Collins and Priscilla Dawkin?

To answer the first question, yes, I hold all 3 volumes of "The Collins Family" by Margaret Hill Collins and Ellinor Collins Aird.

In regard to the second question, the biography on Collins-4064 states the facts found by Margaret Collins on a trip to Wales.  Charles was the 3rd son of William Collins and Priscilla Dawkin, and is given in the will of the said William Collins. Both of Charles' parents died before Charles reached majority age, and he was left in the care of his oldest brother John.  Charles was apprenticed to a cooper in 1731 to Thomas Seed, "hooper", and his wife Elizabeth for the fee of 31 pounds and 10 shillings. This was in Bristol, a main port where sailing ships set out for America.
A record of his sailing, or immigration, was not found, but it is believed that he sailed in around 1734, and disembarked at New Castle, Delaware.  When he died in 1750, he did not leave a will, but an inventory of his estate included a large collection of tools, barrel staves and flour casks, suggesting that he plied his trade as a cooper, in addition to farming and carpentry.
Since he left before completing his apprenticeship, it is not known how he may have paid for his passage to America, which raises the possibility of his coming as an indentured servant. However, no proof of this has been found.
The Mansel generations are not in WikiTree.  To be accepted each generation needs to be properly doumented.

The following is from the Dictionary of Welsh Biography. Will it suffice for Arthur Mansel?

Sir Thomas Mansel (died 1631), baronet, who held the offices of sheriff and knight of the shire for Glamorgan and one of whose sons was ARTHUR MANSEL, father of Bussy Mansel, was succeeded by his eldest son, Sir LEWIS MANSEL (died 1638), 2nd baronet, who matriculated at Oxford, 30 January 1600/1 and was admitted to Lincoln's Inn, 5 February 1603/4. Anthony Wood says that he gave £50 a year for several years towards the library of Jesus College, Oxford; he was first cousin to Francis Mansell, principal of Jesus College, Oxford. Sir Lewis Mansel appears to have been succeeded, as 3rd baronet, by his son, HENRY MANSEL, who, however, died young, being succeeded by his brother, Sir EDWARD MANSEL (died aged 70, 17 November 1706), 4th baronet, who was probably one of the most influential persons in South Wales affairs during his period. The duke of Beaufort visited Margam during his 'Progress' (as Lord President of Wales) in 1684 (T. DineleyAccount of the Progress …), Sir Edward figures prominently in the Margam muniments in schedule where, e.g., there are references to his duties as vice-admiral of South Wales; see also the De Gray Birch Catalogues). One of his daughters, Martha, married Thomas Morgan of Tredegar - see Morgan family of Tredegar; the marriage and its after-effects caused the baronet much trouble because Thomas Morgan was reluctant to return from a tour on the continent of Europe. Sir Edward's heir, Sir THOMAS MANSEL (died 1723), baronet, was created 1st baron Mansel, 31 December 1711. Sir Thomas became prominent not only in South Wales affairs but in Parliamentary and Government circles also. He was Member of Parliament for Cardiff, 1689-98, and for Glamorgan from 1699 to 1711. Archaeologia Britannica, 1707, by Edward Lhuyd, is dedicated to him. From 1704 to 1709 and 1711 to 1712 he was Controller of the Household to queen Anne. He became one of the commissioners of the Treasury, 1710-1, and was one of the Tellers of the Exchequer, 1712-4, whilst, like his father before him, he was also vice-admiral of South Wales. He was intimate with dean Swift, who refers to him in his Journal to Stella; he was also on friendly terms with Robert Harley, afterwards 1st earl of Oxford, with Francis Gwyn, and with Erasmus Lewis - letters to Mansel from all three are in the Margam collection in N.L.W. (See also Hist. MSS. Comm., Report on the Duke of Portland MSS.)
I know Arthur Mansell existed.  When was he born?  When did he die? Who did he marry?  Most importantly, what are the sources for his 5 daughters and who did they marry?

I suppose being Edward III's third cousin, 21 times removed, via a questionable illegitimate child of Edward's great-great grandfather doesn't count!

My wife's maiden name is Winifred Mary Aubrey, but I married her in England and we moved to America in 1986, and she was naturalized soon after. Her father was Joseph Thomas Aubrey, and per the family story, descended from John Aubrey, author of Brief Lives. I've had a hard time developing a family tree beyond the first generation, as her descendants came from various parts of Wales. No idea how she may or may not be related to Barbara Aubrey on your list of Edward III gateway ancestors.
by Donald Child G2G2 (2.9k points)

Hi! John Aubrey, author of Brief Lives, has no known children (he never married).

Assuming this profile is for your wife's father, you might start by adding a biography with known information about him and his parents, with what sources you may have for them.

For a variety of sources about the Aubreys of Wales, check out William Aubrey's profile (gr-grandfather of the author John).

Interesting, as there appears to be a good chance that the line is correct down to the immigrant [https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bradley-10742 Thomas Bradley]. The problems are in the Virginia portion of the Kimbrough line.  Elizabeth Bradley is said to have married two different men. There was no one named Thomas Henry Bradley so who is he? The Kimbrough's need some work.

That said, I need to go through each generation, but Thomas Bradley may be added to the list of EIII descendants.

The biggest problem I am having is proving that Thomas Bourchier's wife Bridget was a Scrope, and that she was a daughter of John Scrope, 8th Lord Scrope of Bolton. She was not on his list of children when parliament examined the Scrope family.

I brought this over to Round 3.  If you comment on the answer then you will see any replies.

So after a great deal of looking, I find no evidence that the wife of Thomas Bourchier had the LNAB of Scrope, and no evidence that John Le Scrope, 8th Baron Scrope had a daughter named Bridget. What I have found is on the page of Thomas Bourchier.

After giving people time to respond, I will be breaking the line here.
Thank you, Joe.

Nancy, use the relationship finder at the top of the page to find your connection to plantagenet-70. The just copy-paste the result into a new answer. You might have to delete all the 'confidence' stuff after each name as they seem to contain a ton of characters that push you over the 12,000 limit.

Also please put your answer on the newer Round 3 G2G question:

Edward III Project: Gateway Ancestors - do you have one? (Round 3)

Actually, the result I get goes through William Randolph, one of the few names with a recognized correct descent from Ed. III.  Congrats.

I believe this line is correct.  Many of the profiles need better documentation to prove the parent-child relationship.  In an all English line such as this it is hard to decide who we would call the gateway ancestor.
Since I emigrated to Australia 6 yrs ago maybe I am the gateway ancestor! Or more likely my grandson who was born here to an Aussie father. He's only 2 so I won't tell him just yet lol

22. Elizabeth is the daughter of John (Plantagenet) of Gaunt KG (abt.1340-1399)
23. John is the son of Edward (Plantagenet) of England (1312-1377)

This is a very interesting case and my favorite line.  I think it is correct but it is not accepted by the powers that be in medieval genealogy. I have so far left it in WikiTree.

The question is at generation 17, did John Weston really marry a daughter of the Earl of Westmorland.

This line breaks at #11.  Thomas Alexander Fleming did not exist (according to his own profile).

Edit: The line has been broken.

have a direct line to Edward III. How to find a gateway?
by Claudia Scarbrough G2G6 Mach 3 (31.5k points)
We define a gateway as that key generation which allows us to move from one population group to another. For Americans, we generally regard the gateway ancestor to be the immigrant ancestor.

In your case, I guess we would call Thomas Rutherford-1684 (1707-1777) your gateway ancestor.  This is unusual as it is an immigrant at a much later date than we usually deal with. We need to go through every generation and show there is good genealogical proof for every child-parent relationship.

8. Elizabeth is the daughter of Thomas Rutherford (1707-1777)
9. Thomas is the son of James Rutherford (1684-1768)
10. James is the son of Isabella (Alleine) Rutherford (1655-1740)
11. Isabella is the daughter of Theodosia Alleine (abt.1630-1668)
12. Theodosia is the daughter of Richard Alleine (abt.1611-1681)
13. Richard is the son of Richard Alleine (1584-1645)
14. Richard is the son of Elizabeth (Bruce) Alleine (1575-1619)
15. Elizabeth is the daughter of Elizabeth Gray (1551-1594)
16. Elizabeth is the daughter of Patrick (Gray) Gray of Buttergask IVth Lord Gray (abt.1508-1584)
17. Patrick is the son of Gilbert Gray (1480-1541) [confident]
18. Gilbert is the son of Elizabeth (Stewart) Stewart Lady Gray (aft.1460-)
19. Elizabeth is the daughter of John (Stewart) Stewart of Balveny First Earl of Atholl (abt.1440-1512)
20. John is the son of Joan (Beaufort) Queen Dowager of Scots (-abt.1445)
21. Joan is the daughter of John Beaufort KG (abt.1371-1410)
22. John is the son of John (Plantagenet) of Gaunt KG (abt.1340-1399)
23. John is the son of Edward (Plantagenet) of England (1312-1377)

Thanks, very cool!
Apparently, there is no actual evidence as to the parentage of #11 Isabel Alleine.
Well, darn. Isn't there a 2nd  line? What about that line? Nope it goes through Isabell Alleine as well.

BUT, skip to Edward I who has 13 lines to me and at least one is confident, through a daughter. Guess grandgfarther of Edward III doesn't count, does it.

Is there a gateway there?

Alexander Innes of Lynn, Massachusetts and Block Island, Rhode Island was not a son of John Innes of Leuchars and his wife Elizabeth Douglas. John Innes had a son Alexander but he lived in Ireland and married a daughter of Rev. Edward Brice, Rector of Balligarry. There is no actual evidence to connect Alexander Innes to any Innes family in Scotland (or England).

I see you recently connected Alexander Innes to these parents.  They will need to be disconnected.

My 8x great grandmother, Anne Skipwith is on Douglas Richardsons list in Royal Ancestry. She's is my gateway ancestor and a descendant of Edward III as well. She and my 8x great grandfather, William Goforth were Quakers. They sailed from Hull on the fly boat, Martha in 1677. Anne's mother, Honora Saunders was also Quaker and died in 1679 while imprisoned at York Castle. I received documentation from the Friends Meeting House in York that she was buried in the old Friends Burial Ground in Bishops Hill, York in an unmarked grave. Back then they did not mark the graves.

The paternal ancestry of Thomas Dudley is a matter of controversy and is not accepted as correct. It is unfortunate that someone has marked it confident.
