Do you have South African Roots or maybe an extended family line in South Africa?

Join the South African Roots Project. We do not just accept experienced members, but our membership is open to new members on WikiTree as well.

The requirements are simple. After you volunteered on WikiTree:
Sign the Honor Code
Become a WikiTree Genealogist
These two requirements will enable you to work on your own family line.
We recommend that you do the Pre-1700 Certification as well because this will enable you to contribute to all open profiles on WikiTree.

After you have done that, just add an answer (not a comment) and tell us a little about yourself and what you are researching.

Do not forget to add the tag south_african_roots to your followed tags.

Hi :)

I am new to WikiTree, but have a lot of information mapped already (mostly in MyHeritage, Ancestry and a few local documents) which I am systematically adding to WikiTree now that I have finally found it.

Would be awesome to form part of this project, but I will naturally collaborate and add all the accurate information I have as I go either way.

Yes, I have South African roots but I would like to find out when my ancestors arrived in South Africa. I know they came from Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands but who and when is unclear.

The names I am interested in are Coetzee, Esterhuyse, Olivier, Dillon, Bougard and Mccleary.

Hello! I was adopted in Rhodesia and my bio family descend from the Ford family 1820 settlers. I am looking forward to learning more about my roots.

I also have an interest in the Herero uprising of 1904 as my GGG grandfather Herman Lange was killed on the first day. There is quite the family story to go with that incident!

My name is Jannie de Goede (Johannes Jacobus) and I have been researching the De Goede family tree since 1993.  My father also compiled a book telling stories about our ancestors. I added all my research  - which was verified - to this book called "DE GOEDE KRONIEKE: (Chronicles). I spend hours doing research and are also in contact with a genealogist in the Netherlands. Looking forward in working together.

I am Petrus Roets. All of my roots have come through South Africa for at least five generations.

I am attempting to trace all of my ancestors back to at least 10 generations. My starting point surnames are Roets, van Huyssteen, Pretorius, Boshoff, Nelson, Smit, Gauché and Yzelle (my great grandparents).

I have had descent success so far and plan to improve and add WikiTree profiles as I go.

Currently I am trying to find the parents of David Benjamin Naude (c.22/11/1855 - 18/09/1930). He was apparently first cousin to his wive Martha Magdalena Maria Naude (Daughter of Naude-1598). The strange thing is I can find her ancestry, but I am struggling to find his connections.

I think my biggest challenges later on will be finding connections in Europe, i.e. Rütz in Germany and Johnson, Prior, Squire and McKenzie in the UK.

I am excited to find out more about my ancestry and to help build the global tree.

Kind Regards

Petrus
