Henry Sewell, Catholic immigrant, Sect'y of Md. under Lord Calvert, husband of Jane Lowe Sewell, died 1665, named cousin Richard Dudley, probably in Va, in his will. Dudley was married to a Mary Sewell.  Can't find her relation to Henry, nor Dudley's. He was a Protestant.

According to WikiTree, Mary was the daughter of Henry and Jane, was 5 years older than her mother, and as well as marrying Richard she was also the mother of his brother Richard.

I'm not touching them, I'll get complaints about messing them up.
Good luck.
Dear RJ, you have a formidable task before you : ) There were several "Henry Sewells / Sewalls / Seawalls" who made an entrance to North America in the 17th century (Eben Graves has done an exhaustive and excellent work on Henry Sewall, I have done a much less impressive work on my particular line with Henry Sewell of the Severn River, MD being our first known paternal ancestor in the New World). You also might visit the Sewell Y-DNA Project at Family Tree DNA. It will become obvious that these various lines are technically unrelated as the DNA results indicate. Over the years, I have seen much work posted on the internet that confuses the various Sewell / Sewall / Seawell families. "Works" such as Gillem's have served only, in my humble opinion, to confuse anyone who reads such.
I saw a story about a house of the Sewell's that is in Maryland. It also interested me because of the Will of Henry Sewell mentioning his cousin, Richard Dudley. As I know it, this reference of cousin could mean a nephew or a brother-in-law. I am interested because I have been doing research on my ancestor Richard Dudley c. 1630 - 1702. I am trying to find out where my Richard Dudley actually came from. Did he migrate from Virginia or come directly into Maryland. I know that Henry Sewell was Secretary to Charles Calvert and was a grant 2,000 acres of land. So is there a connection with the two as to where they came from? Did they come from the same area of England? Need some help. If there is anyone else doing research on this Dudley family, please contact me. I would love to work with someone.

Thank you,

Renee
Henry Sewell, a Catholic, had a sister named Mary who married in England a man named William Dudley. She died in England and Willam remarried in England. I believe Mary and William had a son named Richard, hence the mention of Richard in Henry's will.  There has been no evidence of a connection between Va. Dudley's, Anglicans who hated Catholics and Md Catholic Sewell's .

Hi Virginia,

I have Henry Sewells Will mentioning Richard Dudley as his cousin. I understand that cousin back then may have meant brother-in-law or nephew. I have been doing some research on the Sewells . I couldn't understand how Henry Sewell would be related to my Richard Dudley until I read Henry Sewell was the Secretary to Calvert and was given 2,000 acres in Maryland. So then I got to thinking maybe that is how they came together in Maryland. I understand there house is still there. I have never seen a William Dudley married to a Mary Sewell. Do you have any documents on this?

Renee

Mary, sister of Henry Sewell, Catholic immigrant to Md abt 1660, married William Dudley 29 Apr. 1636 in Sheepy Magna,Leicester,England. The Richard Dudley inheriting 100 acres mentioned in Henry Sewell's will of 1664 was probably a relative of Mary and William. He has no connection to the Virginia Dudley's, descendants of Edward Dudley.

I have seen on Leo van de Pas site posted saying Mary Sewell married Col. Richard Dudley (not to be confused with the Richard that married Jesper)..Mary was sister to Henry and not his daughter.  Their parents were Richard Sewell and Mary Dugdale.

Who is this William Dudley?

Richard who married Mary Sewell had a brother William and they were the children of Edward and Eliz Pritchard Dudley.
There were Protestant Sewell's/Sewall's in Va. There is a Sewell's Point on the Norfolk Naval Base today. Henry Sewell of Md was a Catholic and his sister Mary married a Wm. Dudley in Sheepy Magna, Leicester, England as per records.  The Dudley's of Va were Anglicans as some were vestrymen in  Va.  They  would not have married a Catholic .I have found no connection between Wm Dudley of Leicester England and the Va Dudley's who seem to be from Bristol ,England. The Va Sewell's and the Md Sewell's also seem to have no connection.

Hi:

Don't know if this helps any but from the Maryland Archives online, *Col. HENRY SEWALL of St. Mary's County (Cath.), com. by Lord Baltimore as Principal Secretary and Judge of Probate, 20 Aug. and sworn 20 Nov. 1661. After his death in office,April, 1665, Col. Sewali's widow, who was a cousin of Mrs. Philip Calvert, married the Hon. Charles Calvert, later third Lord Baltimore and Proprietary Governor of Maryland. I believe his last name was Sewall as opposed to Sewell. Perhaps using that spelling will yeild some more info.

Henry and his wife, Jane Lowe are my 11 X Great grandparents. I'm still researching Henry's parents.
