I found one person in my tree who was killed during the unprovoked bombardment of rotterdam in 1940. Is there a category for this?

Maybe put the tags categorization and world war II on this question, so the right people get to see it.
I did but nothing happened. You are right. A sub category should be added under " civlian casualties. "1940_Rotterdam_bombardment" seems ok. But who will do it?
Thanks Natalie

I don't think there is one, but there is a category for World War II Dutch Civilian Casualties, that has a subcategory for the bombing of Westkapelle. I guess a new category for the bombing of Rotterdam would fit there too.

There should be one for the March 1945 bombardment of Bezuidenhout in The Hague as well then.
Thank you both. I feel the dutch wartime categories are a bit thin. I would also add Market Garden (Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Arnhem) and various other 'Liberation activity with civil victims. Bombardment by Allies of Nijmegem and Eindhoven (Philips factory) and last but not least Ned. Indie.

That said: i have no idea how to progress this
Peter, I agree. I also have Dutch ancestors who died in World War II, but were in the Merchant Marine, or who were rounded up by the Germans and sent to forced labour camps, and died there. No idea how to categorize those...

I have been looking at categories and i am utterly confused. No idea how it functions; no view of the overall tree structure (at leas I could not find it). Also not allowed to create something.

If i put your comments on the dutch civilian casualties in a kind of a schematic i come to to an image which i cannot attach to this post so i have to describe it.

Overall cat is "World War II"

subcat is "Netherlands"

subsubcat is "Civilian casualties"

Subsubsubcats could be:

  • Bombing of Westkapelle (present)
  • Putten raid (present
  • 1940 Bombing of Rotterdam (new). Example: Ott-4075
  • 1943 Bombing Philips factory Eindhoven
  • 1944 Fighting around Eindhoven (Market Garden101st airborne Screaming Eagles)
  • 1944 Fighting around Nijmegen (Market Garden 82th airborne AA)
  • 1944 Fighting around Arnhem (Market Garden British 1st airborne)
  • 1945 Bombing of Bezuidenhout (the Hague)
  • Hunger winter
  • Forced labor Europe
  • Prisoner camps Europe
  • Death camps Europe
  • Forced laber camps Dutch Indies
  • Merchant Navy
  • etc
  • etc
I feel someone should first establish a structure.
Is this what we have in mind?

Looks like a good start for this list. Now we need help from the categorization and world war ii teams.
Easy. "labor_camp_victims_germany".

Think also on "Nazi_death_camps" or  concentration_camp_victims"

Again: but who will do this?
The labor and concentration camps are set up already, so you'll have to find the ones you need.

There are prison camps for military already established and the Holocause Project has the concentration camps, death camps, etc covered. I am not sure about civilian prison camps, so I'll need names of them in order to get them added (we have internment camps in WWII as well, but I believe at present there are only scattered additions for Japanese camps).

Some of the others probably won't fit the way we categorize (fighting around places? specific battles are what we do and military units. This isn't Wikipedia).

Others like the bombings can be created, but they need to follow a naming scheme. The Westkapelle one was badly named, so I renamed it included the year as well.
Hello  Natalie,

I fully agree with you. All might be there but you will have to find it. And there should be clear naming and structure conventions. I, as a relative newcomer in the category and sticker area are confused.

Kind regards,

Peter
