Hi Vicky,
Since you seem to be new to DNA testing, here's a quick summary.
1. auDNA is used to test either side of the family back to about 5 generations earlier than the testee, or up to 7 generations by using great care and skill.
2. yDNA only tests the male line, and in your case is not useful (unless you test a brother or something.)
3. mtDNA is used to test the continuous female line, and is inherited by both sexes.
4. The x chromosome (chr 23) behaves strangely, and is best ignored for now.
So, to verify your paternal line your only choice is to use auDNA and find matches on his side of the family. Should your known relatives not be a match (it happens in the best of families) then it may be useful in finding who was the actual father, if that sort of thing interests you. But in any case, don't jump to any conclusions too early.
