                  US Black Heritage Project's

Connecting Challenge

In order to meet the US Black Heritage's goal of creating 50,000+ new African-American profiles in the year 2021, we have started a connecting challenge. It will be similar to the WikiTree Connect-A-Thon with a few exceptions. Please read our challenge space page for all the rules.

Who can participate? Any WikiTree member who has upgraded from guest and has signed the honor code.

Start/End: This Challenge is a month long. We begin on the first of each month and end at midnight EST on the last day of each month.

A participant sticker will be available to all members who join in for at least one of the months. Special stickers will be awarded to all participants who create at least 25 profiles in a month. A Winner's sticker will be given to the top contributor each month.

To Partipate:

  • Read the rules please!
  • Click on the "answer" button below my name on this post to declare you want to participate.
  • Start with an existing profile and create a family member attached to that profile. Keep adding as many family members up, down, and sideways on the tree as you can. Each new profile is one point.
  • Make sure the research is correct! Use primary documents to find and prove relationships.
  • Add the {{African-American Sticker}} to any profiles of Black Americans who lived in the USA, so the project can keep track of the profiles and honor their heritage.
  • Add at least one good source to every profile.
  • Use the Challenge Tracker to keep track of every new profile you create for this challenge. It will count the total for you automatically. If you discover you forgot to track some, you can list them here to count.
  • Repeat.
  • If you are working on enslaved ancestors, every new slave profile you link to a slave owner using the USBH Project's guidelines, counts as a connected profile. See the Heritage Exchange Portal for more information.

Have questions? Please ask.

Only have time for a few profiles? Please join us! Every contribution gets us closer to our goal.

Do you need some profiles to get you started?

If you are already on the WikiTree Discord server, you should have access to the US Black Heritage Connecting Challenge channel. If you can't access it, please send me a message.

Thanks for growing our tree!

Our November total: 3780

Total new profiles for 2021: 33352 for the challenge (but 42,000 WikiTree-wide) 50,000 is within our reach!

November Winners: Carolyn Martin, Michelle Hartman, Nanette Pezzutti, Denise Jarrett, Patty LaPlante

While I may not appear to participate in these challenges (I'm not big on challenges, anyway), I do still work on trying to find Connections for my unConnected (or the disConnected, such as the Pollard family).

I just don't do it to the exclusion of everything else.  smiley

Thanks, Melanie! We are definitely counting all new profiles made in 2021, not just the ones made during this challenge.
I'm in! Plan on adding as many profiles as I can!

thank you, D!smiley

I’m sorry I can’t see the question but I would like to join in.

I have been confirming family members in the Lew family line from Massachusetts.  I should be able to enter several with valid sources this month.

I will participate.  Haven't figured out how the challenges work, lol, but will do what I can to add folks.  My problem is that I don't simply want to add a bare bones profile without trying to find whatever variety of sources might be available - because I want to create profile biographies that are useful and interesting!
by Mary Gossage G2G6 Mach 2 (27.8k points)
There's nothing wrong with that Mary! We need both a lot of profiles and very well done profiles.

I'll try to add a few, but don't bother with the points, etc. as my time is limited.
by Morgan Mulligan G2G6 Mach 2 (20.8k points)

Every profile with the sticker will count in our total profiles for the year. Thanks!smiley

I have already added a few USBH profiles this month. Forgot about the challenge!  So sign me up, as I had planned to add more.

Curious, will the ones I added be counted in the big total? Don't want to bother adding for the challenge, but do want to have them in the grand total.
by Terry Fillow G2G6 Mach 8 (83.2k points)

Yes, any profile with the African-American sticker will count toward the big total. Thanks!smiley

You can count me in. I have a question one of the profiles I am working on, I found his family listed in 1860 census in Charles City Virginia, it lists him as head of household, wife and children, they are listed as Mulatto. In fact there is about a page and a half of Mulatto families listed this way. Would they be considered free negros?
by Vickie Miranda G2G6 (8.0k points)
Thanks, Vickie! Yes, if they are listed in any census record prior to 1870, we consider them free. We have a category for that [[Category: <state>, Free People of Color]]

Question:

Is there a sticker for participants in Civil War regiments?
by s Davenport G2G6 Mach 6 (67.2k points)
There are several war stickers and I can never find them, so I always start at the Military and War Project  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Military_and_War and drill down to the war I want.
