This year, some members of Team Roses will be working on cleaning up old Gedcoms using the Gedi Project basic standards. Let me (Emma) know if you want to participate, so I can make sure we have enough tabs on the spreadsheet.

All quiet here.  I suppose things warm up in October.

As I'm new, I'll introduce myself.  I have been on Wikitree for a few years now and was half way through transferring my tree from Ancestry when we went on a cruise to Canada late 2018.  On the way back my wife suffered a stroke.  Since then I have been concentrating on her tree so my one has been neglected.  I took the England Orphans Trail and learned how to write profiles and have participated in correcting Data Doctor suggestions but this is the first time I have joined in an organised clean up.

I noticed that the subtitle of this post has 2019 rather than 2021 although the main title is correct.  That's just the pedant in me.

I do have a question.  I have looked through the  "how to do it" tutorials and things seem to end with the Challenge Tracker.  When doing normal Data Doctor updates it is required to update the status and leave a "Data Doctor" formatted comment.  Is this not required also for the Source-a thon"?  or does updating the change tracker effect this for us?

Hi JG and welcome! I fixed the typo in my post above smiley

I think you're referring to leaving a comment about your change before clicking save on a profile? I recommend always doing this regardless of the challenge.

OK thanks.  I don't do this on my own profiles but I do it on those I do not manage.  I'll do the Status bit too as that prevents others from trying to fix a suggestion when its already done.

@ JG --  honestly, I used to not leave edit comments on profiles I manage, then I started seeing so many others also editing those profiles and not leaving edit comments that I was spending more time checking to see what had changed than I was in doing other things.  (I still see this from other people on profiles I manage, and it frustrates me that there is no comment.

Because this is a collaborative tree, it is a courtesy to others to leave edit comments, even on profiles you manage.  (The only ones on which I don't leave edit  comments are my kids, and my own.  I even leave them, now, on my brother's profile.   (I do wonder what he thinks of them. cheeky))

Point taken.  No one else seems to edit my blood relatives. My relations by marriage are not on my trusted list.  However, as you say, this is a collaborative tree.  I had reasoned that my changes were available under the changes tab, but this is extra work as opposed to just scanning the activity feed.

Ahh, you aren't a rabbit chaser, then.   I have more non-relatives on my TL than I have relatives! cheeky

But even my rellies get edited by others.  (Not my close ones, but most of those are green locked.)

Oooh, look!  I do believe I see one now . . . hippity-hop . . .

With the recent (very welcome) change we have to  leave a comment now, but rather than just "added source", I'll use the Data Doctor format.

Sooo ..  we are cleaning and sourcing "gedcom data" profiles ? Zoom Zoom .. Kay Knight is sending me a short list. What is the web address for the "GEDI Warriors" ) (i.e) project ?

Hi Jerry, working on Gedcoms is not a requirement, but it's a challenge that many of us are taking on for this year's SAT so we can clean up some really old profiles.

I think this is the page you're looking for:

I'm finding this much harder than I expected.  I can find plenty of profiles that are unsourced but most of the ones I have found don't seem to have sources to find (which is maybe why they are unsourced).  Resolving Data Doctor suggestions is so much easier, you just need to fix the errors.

Perhaps I am missing something.

It depends on what kind of profiles you're working on. The farther back you go, the harder it is to find sources. I try not to do anything before 1800 if I can help it.
Thanks Emma.  I had thought of that and avoided the early ones.  I don't have pre 1500 certification so can't do anything earlier than that anyway.  I tried the Bio Checker on Random, but all but one of the profiles it chose were closed.  I had my best results on my own tree where I had just created the profiles, but not yet looked for sources.  Since they were in my tree there must be a source somewhere that my wife (who did my original research) had found.  With that in mind perhaps I should have a look at the Gedcom spreadsheet.  I looked at one last night but couldn't find any sources,  I gave it a better bio though, even though it didn't count, it was still an improvement,.
It's totally allowed to source previously created profile in your own tree. A lot of people start there.
Another trick I learned is that you can search for sources beforehand, prepare the profile and save it all in a spreadsheet ready for the off.  I only did three this time but next time I'll start as soon as registration opens.  There is a danger that one or two maybe sourced meanwhile, but it does save on the search time.
If you mean source ahead a time, that's discouraged. Our team doesn't do it because the point of the SAT is to find sources during the 72 hours.
OK. I won't do this again.  It was only 3. I have improved 3 other profiles without credit for sourcing, so hopefully this makes up for it.

Come on.  One last effort.

We've overtaken the Mighty Oaks teams.  Though I don't suppose anyone can beat them when combined.  I am not sure what the normalised score is used for.   I thought we would judged on that as it evens out team size.

(Mind you I am still down the bottom of our team!)
by JG Weston G2G6 Mach 2 (29.1k points)
Normalized score is the average score per team member. We can win either by total score or normalized. We are currently in 1st place for normalized since we have the most per team member! Yay!
I saw we were doing well on normalised but didn't know it counted.

back to work.
Drate!   Mighty Oaks have woken up.
