Featured Surnames from September 2010

September was an amazing month for WikiTree. On August 31 we surpassed a major milestone: 200,000 profiles. These profiles were entered mostly one at a time starting back in 2008. As of September 31 we had 475,000 profiles.

You read that right. 200,000 profiles were added over two years. Then another 275,000 were added in one month.

This is almost entirely due to the great review of WikiTree in Eastman's genealogy newsletter. His readers are hardcore genealogists. Many of them came over to WikiTree and brought along their family trees via GEDCOM. We've been hearing from new WikiTreers who have been building their family history for 30, 40, even 50 years and have traced thousands of ancestors.

The top three surnames for September each had over 1,000 new contributions: Dyer, Smith (2,068 additions for a total of 3,600), and Martin (1,083 thanks especially to B.J. Lightfoot). Bill DeCoursey was also a major contributor to some of these families.
