Prominent Baptist Clergyman Mourned – Wednesday, August 3, 1960
Yarmouth – Dr. A. H. Whitman 86, who a year ago was the recipient of an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from Acadia University, passed away in the Yarmouth Hospital Monday. He was born at New Albany, Annapolis County in 1874 the son of Deacon Phineas and Sara Clark Whitman.
Surviving besides his wife are four daughters Stella (Mrs. A. L. Hepworth, East Hampton, Mass., Georgia (Mrs. William Dixon) Montreal, Frances (Mrs. James Reside), Hebron, Jean (Mrs. Albert Werenfels) Montreal, one sister Mrs. Arthur Dunlop, Truro.
Dr. Whitman was educated at Acadia University where he graduated in the class of 1898.
More than a half century was spent in Christian service. His first charge was that of Alberton and Springfield P.E.I. where he was ordained in 1899. Five years later he initiated a pastorate in Sydney Mines that became the Clyde Avenue Baptist Church. He also organized a church at nearby Florence. Succeeding charges were Billtown, Amherst, Dorchester, Lawrencetown, Hebron and Temple Baptist Church in Yarmouth. After his retirement in 1944 he served as an interim pastor at Penobsquis, Main Street, Saint John and Highfield, Moncton. In 1940 he was for a time acting president of the Maritime United Baptist Convention.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday from Zion Baptist Church with Rev. F. A. Cowan officiating. Interment will be in New Albany.
