Mary (Walters) Luce was a Latter Day Saint pioneer.

Biography

She is said to have been a widow at the time of her marriage to Stephen Luce in 1853. Research shows she was the widow of Joseph Southwick, as evidenced by the appearance of her sons George (Walters) Southwick and Joseph Southwick in his household on the 1860 census.[1] They appear as George Luce and Joseph Luce.

Born 24 March 1819. Great Malvern, Worcester, England. Age 29 in 1849, age 31 in 1850, age 30 in 1851, age 34 at death in 1855.

She reported her birth date at 25 March 1821 at Great Malvern, Worcester, England[2], but the date does not match a known record.
Her Patriarchal Blessing says she was born 25 March 1831, daughter of Samuel Watters and Elizabeth. She received her Patriarchal Blessing 13 November 1853 at Salt Lake City.[3]
Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel database gives her birth date as 24 March 1819. The date and place match a christening record at Great Malvern, Worcester, England for a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Elt) Walters, of Barnard Green.[4]

Marriage Husband Joseph Southwick. Wife Mary Walters. Marriage 9 Jun 1828. Dudley, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom.

Immigration: 1849. New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana.

She seems to have been the Mary (age 29), wife of Joseph Southwick (age 38), a mechanic, who immigrated in 1849, destination St. Louis. Their family included his sons by his first marriage, and her sons George (age 4) and Joseph (age 1-1/2).[5]
Records of the LDS Council Point (Iowa) Branch report "Mary Southwick age 30, George Southwick age 7, Joseph Southwick age 4" in October 1851.[6]

Census The 1850 census of Pottawatomie, Iowa shows her as Mary Southwick, age 31, born in England, with sons George Southwick, age 6, and Joseph Southwick, age 3, both born in England.[7]

Immigration: 1852. Great Salt Lake City.

She is probably the Mary Southwick who appears in the journal of the Council Point Company. An entry dated 29 November 1851 lists her among those to intend to travel with the company: "Mary Southwick, 3 in family, 1 cow, 1 young stock, Unknown." On 2 March 1852 she appears on another list of those intending to travel. On 5 April 1852: "Mary Southwick. In expectation of going." And on 12 April 1852: "Mary Southwick. My prospects are the same as they were. I have 2 cows, and can arrange for provisions. I have in family myself and 2 little boys."[8]

Marriage Husband Stephen Luce. Wife Mary Walters. Marriage 6 Feb 1853. Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.[9]

An index card to Utah Temple records says "Walters - Mary, Born 25 Mar. 1821 at Great Malvern, Worcester, Eng., Living, Married to Stephen Luce, Heir, self, Sealed 6 Feb. 1853."[10]

"DIED: In this city, June 23rd, MARY WALTERS, wife of Stephen Luce, aged 34 years, formerly from Worcestershire, England."[11]
