Rev. War Pension No. S16015. Received an annual pension of $41.21.

1759-1776: It is assumed Gardner spent his boyhood in Washington Co., Rhode Island removing to Massachusetts before the age of 17, from where he served during the Revolutionary War. Stated in his pension: "He was a substitute for his father, to serve his term in the Continental Army, entering from the town of Hardwick, MA where he resided."

"My next term of service was performed under Lt. Wheeler of New Britian, in the state of New York, at which place I resided. A substitute for Benjamin Wait, my uncle, who was drafted into Service, last day of Aug 1781." (DAR Patriot Index, p. 709)

August 1777, he served under command of Lt. Nathan Leonard at the Battle of Bennington, Vermont.

1 Oct 1776 first enlisted at Hardwick MA as a substitute for his ailing father @17. He served as a Pvt. in Capt. Jones Co. and Col. Sparhawks Regt. He was in the Battle of Brunswick and assisted in the capture of five Hessians, horses, ammunition and small arms. He was discharged after serving five months and ten days. His pension record is #16015 in which he claims being born in Exeter and residing in New Britain NY. 27 Jul 1777 enlists for his second term at Hardwick MA three days before his 18th birthday. Marches 85 miles in four days to Bennington VT. Assists in burying the dead after the Battle of Bennington and was a sentinel at the meeting house when the prisoners attempted to escape. He served under Ens. Nathan Leonard of the Massachusetts troops. 1 Apr 1778 enlists for his third term of service from Hardwich for three months. Was to go to Boston to conduct some troops back to Rutland VT where he was a guard. Gardner's fourth term began three days after returning home in Aug 1778. Served under Lt. John Dinsmore on General Sullivan's Rhode Island expedition. Helped at night to secretly move supplies from one fort to another within sight of two large armed British ships. Gardner was one of the first settlers in Isle La Motte VT 1778.

Aug 1781 Gardner began his fifth term of service. He was at New Britin NY for 10-12 days where he was living. In Columbia County NY he substituted for his uncle Benjamin Wait who had been drafted. He chased Tories and Indians. His final term of service began in the fall of 1781. Served for a stranger in poor health he met at Stockbridge MA who could not complete his term in Schoharie NY. There is some discrepancy about the birth dates and names of some of the children. Although Jerusha appears in most records Cynthia does not. Mrs. Robert Browning feels that her grandmother may have been named Cynthia Jerusha and that is why Cynthia does not often appear. As for the sons, a man needed to be 21 years old before being made a freeman. Solomon must have been born by 1790 to have been made a freeman in 1811. Amhearst must have been born in the years between Downer and Alta or after Alta in 1812 to have been married in 1832. Much of Mrs. Brownings information came from LDS files forwarded to her by Mrs. Ezra Curtis a descendant of Sarah Wait. There is some work needed here.

Wait-1420 and Wait-323 appear to represent the same person because: Gardener vs Gardner, clear duplicate

Waite-1323 and Wait-323 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same person, there good reasons for the variations in spelling, ether is ok with me and this merger should go forward.
