Early Life

Barnabas was born in 1757 in Ireland.

Family lore states that at the age of 14, Barnabas was kidnapped from his family in Ireland and brought to the United States as a child. While the ship was docked in Boston harbor, Barnabas jumped ship and swam to shore. Seeking refuge with a town's pastor, Barnabas would eventually enlist in the Revolutionary War, marry, then settle with his family in both Pennsylvania and in Ohio. Other documents indicate that he was indentured to Reverend Tompson Smith.[1]
