Harriet was born in about 1826 in Walls, Orkney. She was the daughter of James Thomson.^[1]

When Harriet was about 29 she married John George Heddle Smith on 29 March 1855 in Walls and Flotta, Orkney, Scotland. The couple had 3 children: James Smith, Alexina Smith and Christina Smith.^[2]
