Robert Thomas was born about 1832 in Owen Township, Jackson, Indiana, United States, son of Louis H Thomas and Francis (Owen) Thomas.

Robert married Lucy Ann (Curry) Thomas (born in Indiana) in 1851 in Indiana.[2] Their children were:
