Biography

'New York state flag'
Oliver Taylor II was a New Yorker.
1776 Project
Private Oliver Taylor II served with 4th New York Regiment, Continental Army during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Oliver Taylor II is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A112793.

Oliver Taylor was born in 1747. He passed away in 1789. Oliver married Sarah Hillier (1754–1835) on 1 June 1770 in New York. [1] and they had at least five daughters, including the following:

Elizabeth Taylor (Vanderbilt) on 24 Aug 1771–31 July 1856, [2] Elizabeth was christened at Saint Andrews Church, Richmond, Richmond, New York Colony. Her marriage mentioned page 403 Section: Vol IV. Staten Island and Its People. A History 1609-1929.

Hester Taylor (Silva) 1772 – 13 Oct.1853,

Phebe Taylor (Johnson) 15 Mar. 1773 – 3 Apr. 1837,

Frances Taylor on 11 Mar 1776, christened at Saint Andrews Church, Richmond, Richmond, New York.

Hannah T. Taylor (Holden) Jan. 1788 – 1 Mar. 1846, wife of Nathan Holden. [3]

Pvt. Oliver Taylor's name appears numerous times on the muster roll of Capt. Israel Smith's company in the 4th New York Regiment where he served as a fife player in the service of the United States of America. Capt. Smith was the paymaster of that company. Pvt. Oliver Taylor served (on and off) between 19 Dec. 1776- March 1780. Eventually, he served as a horseman until 2 Sep. 1785.

Oliver Taylor was mentioned in his grandfather, Dr. Oliver Taylor's will. Dr. Oliver Taylor named his son (Pvt. Oliver Taylor II's father) Thomas Taylor, as his heir. Dr. Oliver Taylor named his grandson, Oliver Taylor, to inherit his lands in the New Jersey Colony. He named granddaughter, Hannah Cole. He named his daughter, Elizabeth, wife of Nehemiah Smith, and son Thomas Taylor as executors, along with neighbor John Hilyer Jr., (Oliver Taylor's father-in-law?). Witnesses were John Beddell Jr., carpenter, Richard Cole, innkeeper, Thomas Taylor Jr. of Richmond County, New York Colony. Inventory 9 Sep 1771. [4]

According to Find-a-Grave, Oliver Taylor died on 29 Apr 1789 at the age of 41 on Staten Island, Richmond County (Staten Island), New York, USA. His remains were buried at Saint Andrews Church Cemetery, Richmondtown, Richmond County (Staten Island), New York, USA.[5]

Research Notes

There is some evidence that Oliver's father's name was Thomas Taylor, who also fought in the Revolutionary War, according to the following sources.

1. Colonel Thomas Taylor (Colonial Militia), Revolutionary War veteran on Geni, [4] Col Thomas Taylor b. 10 Sep 1743 Amelia County, Virginia, USA; d. 16 Nov 1833 (aged 90) Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, USA. (six sons: John Taylor; William Taylor; Thomas Taylor, Jr.; Henry Pendleton Taylor; one daughter, Annis Taylor Hill, and two others)

2. Col. Thomas Taylor, Revolutionary War veteran on Geni, [5] Col Thomas Taylor b. 10 Sep 1743 Amelia County, Virginia, USA; d. 16 Nov 1833 (aged 90) Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, USA. His remains were buried in the Taylor Evangelical Methodist Church Cemetery Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, USA.

Col. Thomas Taylor's wife was Ann Taylor. They had at least seven children, including two documented sons, John Taylor (1770–1832) and John W. Taylor (1779–1814).

Something is peculiar about the information from this source. Especially suspect is the idea that parents would give two of their children almost the same name (John vs. John W.) Moreover, this source does not refer to a son, Oliver Taylor. Nothing in the Gini record rules out the possibility that one of the two unknown or un-named children was Oliver. However, more research is needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Dispute Origin

There is some evidence that Hester was born on 23 Sep. 1773. If one assumes that the daughters' birth dates (Hester and Phebe) are all correct, this calls into question the hypothesis that Phebe Ann Taylor Johnson was the daughter of Oliver and Hester Hillyer Taylor. It is unlikely that both Hester's (23 Sep. 1773) and Phebe's (15 Mar. 1773) birthdates are correct unless Phebe Ann Taylor Johnson were born into a different Taylor family.

Which is correct, the birth dates or the lineage has yet to be determined. More research is needed to resolve the discrepancy. It will depend partly on the certainty in the data sources.
