Samuel Sr. Will

In his will made December 17,1800, West Greenwich, R.I., and probated the last Monday in January 1801, Samuel Tanner names Gardner and Christopher, not yet of age; Mary his wife; son Benjamin; daughters Anna Johnson, Hannah Tanner, Dorcas Tanner, Deborah Tanner, Betsey Tanner, Mary Tanner, and makes provision for a child not born.
(Samuel, who died single.)
After his death, his widow m. March 17, 1808, John Lewis of Coventry,[2] R.I., and died in 1837 .

Samuel Tanner, Sr., was Corporal in Capt. Gorton 's company, Col. Lippitt's regiment, September 1,1776 , to January 17,1777. [3]
This regiment served one year and one additional month voluntarily ; it was taken into Continental pay in May, 1776 .
The regiment was first quartered on the island of Rhode Island, marched westward in September, 1776, and joined Washington at New York, after the battle of Long Island; was assembled with other troops at Crosswick's, New Jersey, and formed part of the brigade under Col. Daniel Hitchcock, and volunteered for an additional month to complete the campaign.
Capt. Thomas Gorton was brother to the father of Mary (Gorton ) Tanner.
See will of Benjamin Gorton, in which he speaks of dau. Mary Tanner and son -in -law Samuel Tanner.
Samuel Tanner was a farmer and blacksmith, and owned a considerable tract of land in West Greenwich.
The following receipt appears in the U.S. collection, Providence Historical Society (No. 22). [4]
“ West Greenwich, April 8, 1777; received of the late Capt. Thomas Gorton, eleven pound, four shilling and four pence lawful money in full for my wages in the last years campaine; received per me, Samuel Tanner.”
A similar receipt appears given by Gardiner Tanner, son of Samuel. Smith's Civil and Military History gives Samuel Tanner as Captain of the 3rd company in West Greenwich in 1788, 1789 and 1790.
