Joseph Tankersley Sr. was born in 1766 in Carolina, Virginia, son of George Tankersley (1756 - >1790) and Elizabeth (Boldin) Tankersley (~1745 - 1800).

Joseph married Catherine Buckner (1768 - )

Their children were:

  1. Captain Joseph Tankersley Jr. (1790 - 1850)
  2. William Tankersley (1805 - 1847)
  3. Buckner A Tankersley (1813 - 1862).

Joseph died in 1822 in Virginia aged ~56.


Military

A letter to the Secretary of the Treasurer: Georgia Columbia County For the purpose of obtaining the benefit of "an Act for the relief of certain surviving officers and Soldiers of the Army of the Revolution" approved on the 15th of May 1828, I Joseph Tankersley Senior of the County of Columbia & State of Georgia Do hereby declare that I enlisted in the Continental line of the Army of the Revolution, for and during the War and continued in its service until its termination at which time I was a private in Captain James Armstrong's company of Light Horse in the Regiment or Corps commanded by Colonel Henry Lee and I also declare that I afterwards received a Certificate for the reward of $80, to which I was entitled under a resolve of Congress passed the 15th of May 1778. And I further declare that I was not on the 15th day of March 1828 on the Pension list of the United States. Sworn to & subscribed before me this 16th day of September 1828 S/ Wm B.
