Biography

Flag of Bedfordshire (adopted 2014)
Richard Talbot was born in Bedfordshire, England.

In 1086, a Richard Talbot is recorded in Domesday (Beds).[1] Burke (1852), calls him the first notable of his family and explains that he held nine, "hides of land from Walter Gifford, Earl of Buckingham,"[2] while Talbot (1874), also citing Domesday, states the Bedford holding came from Walter Giffard, Baron of Bolbec.[3]

Cawley (2006), however, thinks there were two men named, Richard Talbot. He believes that the RIchard in Domesday died some time after 1186;[7] while another -- of unconnected and uncertain relation -- who was born around the time or maybe a decade after the Conquest ... is the man who married the daughter of Gerard de Gournay.[8]

Parents

It should be noted that while Powel (1899), claims that the father of Richard in Domesday, was a William ... Burke (1852) and Cawley (2006), make no attempt to attach him to a set of parents.

The parents listed for this individual are speculative and may not be based on sound genealogical research. Sources to prove or disprove this ancestry are needed. Please contact the Profile Manager or leave information on the bulletin board.

Marriage

Burke (1852) and Powlett (1899), both state that Richard's wife was a daughter of Gerard de Gournay, but they don't name her.[2] Cawley (2006), asserts she was Amacie.

All three authors state that the couple had two sons, but they only agree on the identity of Hugh. Depending on source, his birth date ranges anywhere from c. 1078 to before 1100.

As for the other son, his identity is called into question.

While authors like Burke (1852) and Powel (1899), assert that Richard had a son Geoffrey, Cawley (2006), disputes this and makes him the son of Geoffrey (b. 1050/65? - d. ante 1130), who is recorded in Domesday.[9] He names William as the second son, quoting a charter, dated 1181/3, proving that the two sons were Hugh and William:

"Richardi Tallebot et Amicie uxoris eius et Hugonis et Willelmi filiorum suorum..."

While acknowledging the Geoffrey in Domesday, Powlett (1899), asserts that he was RIchard's brother. She goes on to state that Geoffrey II (d. 22 Aug 1140 or abt. 1140), is instead the son of Richard, and describes him as a partisan of Empress Maud (b. 1101/2 - d. 1167), who was also the ancestor of:

  • the Talbots of Bashall;
  • and Hugh, constable of Plessey castle in Essex, who became a monk at Beaubec during his later years; and is also the ancestor of the Earls of Shrewsbury.[4][5]

Elsewhere ... Gurney (1845) and Gardener (1917), make Richard as both father and brother, of Geoffreys, and the son of "Le Sire Talbot".[6]

Richard’s birthplace states Badleslane, Bedfordshire. Could this be old English for Battlesden, Bedfordshire? I’m not familiar with English place names but can’t locate a place called Badleslane on Google. Alternatively, could it be the name of a castle? Badleslane has been duplicated across a number of genealogy sites which come up in Google search results. I’ve not been able to identify the source for the birthplace.
