Lieutenant James Taggart was born May 11, 1742, in Roxbury, Suffolk county, Massachusetts. He moved to Petersborough, New Hampshire, with his parents in 1752. He and his brother John, and his father, are all veterans of the American Revolutionary War. James entered the service as an Ensign, in Captain Massey's company, under the command of Colonel James Reed of the Continental Line. [1]
Lieutenant Taggart is honored for his military service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, as Ancestor #A112410. DAR records indicate that he died January 25, 1828, and that his wife's name was Elizabeth McNee. Application for membership in the Society have been made by the descendants of his sons, John Taggart, who married Mercy Smith; Washington Taggart, who married Susannah Law; and of his daughter, Margaret Taggart, who married James Robbe.
Elizabeth (McNee) Taggart, born 1740, a daughter of William McNee/ MacNee and Mary Eckless (Brownley) McNee, died November 1, 1814 and is buried in the Jarmany Hill Cemetery, in Sharon, Hillsborough county, New Hampshire. Lieutenant Taggart died in 1828, at the age of 85 years and is buried with her. There are photographs of their headstones on their Find A Grave memorials. [2]
