John was born before 1755 if he was over age 45 in the 1800 Census.
In October 1771 in Tryon County, North Carolina, he was ordered to serve on a jury to lay out a road from William Davis on Catheys Creek to the province line and on to the Charles Town market road.
On 7 Oct 1780, John Sutton and William Sutton fought as Loyalists under Lt Samuel Young and Major Zachariah Gibbs at the Battle of Kings Mountain. In June 1781, John Sutton and William Sutton evacuated Fort Ninety-Six with the Loyalist troops and John was in Dorchester, South Carolina in Oct 1781.[1] Their names do not appear on a list of Rutherford County property owners subject to confiscation for treason in January 1783.[2] This may or may not be the same John Sutton who lived in Rutherford County, North Carolina.
In 1785, he entered 150 acres on a fork of Floyds Creek, Thomason Mill Creek which was granted in 1792 (# 602).
He was enumerated in the first three US censuses taken in Rutherford County, North Carolina; 1790,[3] 1800,[4] and 1810.[5]
On 30 Mar 1814, he wrote his will and it was presented to court in July 1817.[6]
