Biography

Matthew was born before 7 August 1831 in Ramsgate, Kent, England. He was the son of James Smithers and Frances (Harman) Smithers.[1] He was baptised on 7 August 1831 in St. George's, Ramsgate, Kent, England.[2]

In 1851 Matthew (age about 19) was living in Princes Street, Ramsgate, Kent. Baker Journeyman.[3]

When Matthew was 19 he married Elizabeth Ann Challis on 3 August 1851 in St Georges Church, Ramsgate, Kent.[4] On Matthew's marriage certificate his profession is listed as a Baker with his father James Smithers as a tailor. The couple had 7 children: Kate Smithers, Robert Matthew Smithers, Eliza (Bessie) Smithers, James Harman Smithers, Lucy Smithers, Frederic Raynes Smithers and Mary Smithers.

In 1861 Matthew (age about 29) was living in Ramsgate, Kent, England. Baker.[5]

Matthew died at the age of 35 on 3 January 1867 in Eastry, Kent, England.

Research Notes

On Frederic Raynes marriage certificate in 1890, Matthew is noted as deceased and profession as Licenced Victualler.
